"This study aimed to determine the relationship between the abundance of phytoplankton and water quality in Ubihan River, Meycauayan, Bulacan. Water samples were collected at three different sites during the five sampling months from October 2022 to February 2023. Grab and composite sampling methods were used to collect water samples. Physico-chemical properties of water include temperature, secchi disk turbidity, total dissolved solids, salinity, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, and total coliform. Anthropogenic activities were determined by survey method coupled with interviews with 353 respondents. Results showed that temperature, pH, and nitrates met the DENR's standard for Class C waters, unlike DO, phosphate, and total coliform concentrations. There were twenty-three (23) phytoplankton species identified, with Melosira granulata being the most abundant and Closterium acerosum being the least abundant. The result of Palmer’s Algal Pollution Index showed that the Ubihan River has a probable high level of organic pollution. The results of the Shannon-Wiener Index (H’ = 3.06) and Simpson’s Diversity Index (C = 0.950) indicated high phytoplankton species diversity, while the Margalef Index indicated moderately high species richness (R = 3.31). Sorensen Index of Similarity showed 100% degree of similarity of phytoplankton community among the three sampling sites. Based on the Pearson r Test, there is no significant relationship between the physico-chemical and bacteriological properties of water and the abundance of phytoplankton species in the Ubihan River." -- Author's Abstract
