The Technological University of the Philippines—Manila has been using
manual library management for decades. However, with the increasing volume of
books and patrons, this manual method has become inefficient and vulnerable to
human error, misplacement, and theft. Hence, this research aims to develop an
RFID-based book management system with dual power sources. This will utilize
radio frequency identification technology to manage the newly acquired
engineering books in a more efficient and secure manner. This composed of a
security gate for theft detection, a kiosk for automated book checkouts, and a dual-
interface application that has library mode and security mode. In library mode, the
librarian must install the RFID tags discreetly on the books and then register them
on the Book Management System. While in security mode, the librarian can
automate the book checkout and anti-theft system. Moreover, this also employs a
hybrid research approach that utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research
techniques, and the statistical analysis yielded positive findings across the signal
strength and running time testing of the system. The testing results revealed that
ultra-high-frequency RFID readers can have an accurate read range of 1 to 6 feet,
and the backup power source can provide a continuous power supply for 6 to 8
hours. Therefore, these findings highlight the ability of RFID-based book
management system with dual power sources to optimize the book management
system and reduce book theft in the TUP-Manila Library.
