Wind power is rapidly expanding as a renewable energy source crucial for urban energy
needs. This study details the progress made in creating a power generation system
utilizing a Savonius VAWT. The SVAWT functions regardless of wind direction, is
specifically designed to operate efficiently in low-velocity, and turbulent wind conditions.
The electrical system comprises a 1KW inverter, MPPT charge controller, breakers, and a
400W-rated alternator. The mechanical system involves a chain and sprocket mechanism
with a chain featuring 20 teeth coupled to a flywheel, which, in turn, connects to the
alternator using sprockets with 40 and 50 teeth. The study was conducted in Teresa,
Rizal, where researchers conducted two types of testing over a 21-day period. Each day
included two trials, with a 350W rice cooker load, examining both battery-only and a
combination of battery and SVAWT. In the battery-only tests, the highest recorded
voltage loss was 0.24V on days 15 and 19. In combined testing, the maximum wind
speed reached 14.71 km/hr with an RPM of 47.5, representing 42.52% over a 31-minute
period on day 16. During this time, power consumption was 180.83W, with a power
output of 257.73W. The prototype exhibits a charging peak voltage of 10V, 81 RPM, and
a current of 2.64A. Evaluation by 50 respondents, including professionals, instructors,
and students, based on 7 criteria: functionality, aesthetics, workability, durability,
economy, safety, and salability resulted in an overall mean of 4.56 with a descriptive
rating of Excellent.
