The water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a skimming plant perceived as one of the ten
(10) most exceedingly terrible weeds in the world as characterized by its development
rates, broad dispersal abilities, substantial and fast regenerative yield, and wide ecological
tolerance. While some consider it as pest, others found that water hyacinth can be used as
a raw material to produce new products. Villar Arts and Crafts utilizes water hyacinth from
Pasig River in making arts and crafts as its main ingredient in paper making. The developed
prototype aimed to mix the water hyacinth solution in a convenient way and to increase the
production per operation of Villar Arts and Crafts from twenty (20) kilograms to 60
kilograms of mixing water hyacinth solution. This was done by increasing the torque of
the motor avoiding overloading and overheating in the mixing process. Using a
comparative test between the existing machine and the prototype, capacity test result had
shown that the prototype could mix 60 kilograms of water hyacinth solution in 12-15
minutes which is 86.79% more efficient and 55.97% faster respectively. The prototype was
presented to thirty (30) evaluators to determine its performance and using the TUP
evaluation instrument the prototype obtained a total mean of 4.44 with a descriptive rating
of Very Good. It signifies that the developed water hyacinth solution mixing machine could
provide a more efficient means of mixing with lower power consumption compared to the
existing machine.
