Bamboo has been utilized for structural purposes for thousands of years in diverse
regions worldwide. It is a strong, rapidly growing, and highly sustainable material that
contributes to structural engineering. The Bambusa Blumeana species is the most abundant
in the Philippines and is considered to contribute to a low housing structure due to its
excellent mechanical and physical properties. The use of Bambusa Blumeana for structural
members has been limited, especially considering the influence of mortar infill and washer
sizes on modern bamboo connections, which are prone to splitting failure and crashing
failure due to the presence of bolt and dowel-type connections. In this study, the research
aims to determine the effects of mortar and variation of the outer diameter stainless-steel
flat and curved washer on the compressive strength of the bolted T-Connection Bambusa
Blumeana, as well as failure modes and the optimal outer diameter size for the connection.
The results indicate that the variation in outer diameter flat or curved stainless-steel
washers does not significantly affect the compressive capacity of the bolted T-Connection.
However, it does contribute to a minimal amount of compressive resistance and results in
a more prolonged deformation of the connections. Ultimately, the findings indicate that the
optimal outer diameter washer ranges from 40 mm down to 20 mm, indicating that the 40
mm outer diameter produces the highest compressive load for flat and curved surfaces,
with or without mortar. The ASTM and ISO standards for the determination of the physical
and mechanical properties of the bolted T-Connection Bambusa Blumeana guided the
findings.
