This study addresses environmental and food waste issues by exploring the use of corn
husk, an abundant agricultural byproduct, in paper-based sachet packaging. The research
aims to enhance the process of bleaching corn husks for paper production and refine
pulping, papermaking, and sachet-making technologies to meet food industry standards.
Fourth-year Food Technology students at TUP-Manila are developing single-use corn
husk paper sachets for dry ingredients, specifically sugar, to provide convenience and
portion control. The study assesses the sachets' physical properties (weight, thickness,
burst strength, and moisture absorption). The production process involves pulping corn
husks with additives, forming paper, and applying a durability-enhancing coating.
Consumer satisfaction will be evaluated using a 5- point Likert scale. The respondents are
50 Food Industry Managers and consumers from the National Capital Region. The rating
is "Very Acceptable”. This research presents an innovative approach to repurposing corn
husk waste into eco-friendly packaging, promoting sustainability and offering a practical,
environmentally conscious solution to waste management challenges, while also
supporting Filipino farmers and market vendors.
