This research addresses the significant healthcare challenges faced by the
Iraya indigenous cultural communities in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro,
particularly those in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).
While relying on the Rural Health Unit and private clinics, these communities
experience health inequities intensified by remote locations, socioeconomic
limitations, and cultural barriers. This study aims to develop and propose a
culturally sensitive and sustainable community health center while recognizing the
rich cultural heritage and unique needs of the Iraya. Employing a Community-
Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach and a mixed-methods design
incorporating fieldwork, focus group discussions, interviews, surveys, and
descriptive and content analysis, the research seeks to conduct a thorough
community diagnosis and profiling to inform the development of a relevant health
intervention program. Initial findings reveal that sitios Ambang and Sipit Saburan
in Barangay Villaflor face problems in accessing quality and sustainable healthcare
due to geographic isolation, socioeconomic constraints, cultural
misunderstandings, and a lack of culturally sensitive healthcare provisions.
Ultimately, this research underscores the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to
ensure accessible, sustainable, and quality healthcare that respects and aligns
with the cultural context of the Iraya indigenous community.
