This thesis aims to investigate the impact of parental incarceration on the mental well-being of
children, and how a recreational activity such as coloring can help reduce their stress and sadness.
The focal point of this study is the creation of a short story coloring book titled "Stella," with a story
that mirrors the current situation of the children and their parents. The short story coloring book
was then implemented in an event held at Quezon City Female Dormitory, organized by the
researchers together with their NGO Partner, Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc.
(HLAF). The children and their incarcerated parents during the event were able to engage and share
the activity of coloring the book while also catching up and having an intimate time together. In
order to collect information and ascertain the impact of the coloring books, the researchers used a
descriptive research approach under qualitative research design with a population of twenty (20)
children consisting of both males and females, all ages between 4 and 13 years old. In gathering the
data, the researchers used pre-assessment and post-assessment via Google Forms, interview and
observation, and a five-point Likert scale for survey questionnaires. The above-mentioned
instruments are all noted with their Informed Consent Form (ICF) that is provided for the
respondents before participating. Based on the findings, all the respondents who participated in the
event agreed that they had a lot of fun and got to enjoy the time with their parents. In relation to
the following question, all the feedback had the same reason for how they enjoyed the event. All of
the children responded that it was a fun experience to share the coloring activity with their PDL
mother.
