| Summary, etc. |
The purpose of this study is to design a machine that will convert rice straws into a plant tray. This is to provide farmers an alternative means of using excess rice straw instead of burning them. Since the proponents wanted to lessen the use of plastic trays, they designed a machine that replaces plastic with readily-available materials that are considered as residue in agriculture. Theoretical computations and various testing procedures were applied to maximize the yield in the process. The machine operates in two stages: (1) the defibrator turns the rice straw into a self-binding fiber, and (2) the mold shapes the fibers into a 2x2 slot tray. In the defibration process, there is a rotor that puts a shearing force to the raw materials in order to separate the fibers. At the end of the study, a machine that turns rice straws into plant trays was materialized. The trays produced were strong enough to hold nursery plants, and they were found out to slowly degrade in the soil over time as they are biodegradable. The biodegradable trays are more sustainable as compared to the plastic ones, and they are far less harmful to the environment in general. |
