Summary, etc. "The study aimed to determine the soil characteristics, vegetation and carbon sequestration in Brgy. Luyahan, Lian, Batangas, Philippines. The sampling was conducted in five consecutive months starting May 2018 in three selected sites that vary based on land use. The soil samples collected through composite method and were analyzed at the Bureau of Soil and Water Management. The diversity of the tree species was determined using the Shannon Weiner Index, Simpson’s Index and Sorensen’s Index of Similarity. The amount of carbon and carbon dioxide sequestered was computed using the carbon calculator of the U.S. Forest Climate Change Resource Center. Based on the inventory of species, Musa panadisiaca, Cocos nucifera, Sonneratia alba, Sonneratia ovata and Prosopis juliflora are the five most dominant species present in the beach forest trail. Among the three sites, Site 2 is the most diverse attributed to its soil characteristic where the highest clay, NPK and organic matter content was recorded thus creating more favorable environment for numerous species to thrive. Site 1 and Site 3 had the lowest diversity index due to the land use conversion in the areas. Kruskal-Wallis Test revealed that there are significant differences in pH (June-September), Phosphorus (May-September), Potassium (September), Organic Matter (May, June & September), and Nitrogen (May, June & September) in all sampling sites while the result of Friedman Test showed that there are significant differences in all parameters throughout the sampling month in the three selected sites except for the pH of Site 1. Results of carbon and carbon dioxide revealed that the beach forest trail can accumulate 32.36 % of the carbon dioxide emitted by the households in Brgy. Luyahan and 2,047 more trees with <10 DBH are needed to meet 0 % carbon emission in the baranggay." -- Author's Abstract
