| Summary, etc. |
"The study focused on the water quality, habitat and food preferences of Duhol (Hydrophis semperi) during the months of April to August 2018. The physico-chemical and biological properties of water was determined in terms of temperature, turbidity, total dissolved solids, salinity, conductivity, resistivity, dissolved oxygen, pH. Phosphate, nitrate, and coliform count. Composite sampling was used in the collection of Duhol. Survey and interview were administered to the respondents to determine their anthropogenic activities and their perception on the protection and conservation of the river. Based on the findings, the most common anthropogenic activities near the river are excreting domestic waste, fishing and aquaculture practices. Results of physic-chemical properties of water showed that the dissolved oxygenn and nitrate were low during the five months sampling period, while phosphate were relatively high and exceeded the standard set by the DENR for class C waters. Total coliform count was high in all months which shows that the water of poor quality. A total of 89 Duhol were caught during the five months sampling period. The abundance of Duhol is highly correlated with dissolved oxygen (r=0.708) and turbidity (r=0.74) while, temperature, nitrates, salinity, conductivity, resistivity and total dissolved solids have a very low correlation and total coliform have a slight correlation followed by the phosphate with a moderate correlation. Conservation efforts must focus on protecting Morong Riverine ecosystem to guarantee the continuous existence of Duhol species in the area." -- Author's Abstract |
