Nanoparticles are substances with at least one-dimension size from 1 to 100nm. These
nanosized-particles have a lot application which includes antimicrobial agent, catalyst,
optical sensing. This study focused on the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles
particularly CuO and Ag nanoparticles using the leaves extract of Eclipta prostata (false
daisy) as reducing and stabilizing agent. The synthesized nanoparticles were initially
characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy to determine their optical properties. Also, this
was used to confirm the presence of silver nanoparticles which exhibited an absorption at
434nm, which correspond to its surface plasmon resonance. SEM analysis showed that
both CuO and Ag nanoparticles have quasi-spherical morphology. EDX analysis identifies
the presence of Cu, O for CuO nanoparticles and Ag for Ag nanoparticles. Moreover, the
presence of elemental C is associated with the organic molecules from the leaves extract
which serves as capping agent of the nanoparticles. This were further confirmed by FTIR
analysis which shows several functional group peaks common to organic molecules. The
antimicrobial activity of both CuO and Ag nanoparticles was tested against E. coli and S.
aureus. Only Ag nanoparticles showed exhibited antimicrobial activity against both
microbes. The catalytic property of both CuO and Ag nanoparticles was evaluated using
the test dye methylene blue. Both metal nanoparticles showed promising catalytic
performance in decolonizing the dye. About 82% and 95.2% of dye were for 60 seconds
using CuO and Ag nanoparticles, respectively. |
