The study utilized coconut waste products, specifically coir and shell, as<br/>reinforcement for composite board bonded with vinyl ester resin. Coconut coir was<br/>extracted from the coconut husk, cleaned, cut into 3 cm length fibers, and treated with<br/>NaOH for 72 hours. As for the filler material, coconut shells were crushed, sieved through<br/>a 100-mesh size, and treated with NaOH for 2 hours.<br/>Eight (8) design mixes were prepared. The composite boards were fabricated using<br/>hand lay-up method, and the boards were evaluated in accordance to ASTM D1037 and<br/>Philippine National Standards (PNS). Samples were tested for water absorption, thickness<br/>swelling, modulus of rupture, and nail head pull through.<br/>The treated coconut coir indicates a tensile strength of 9.28 Kgf/g.m and an<br/>elongation of 31.76%. On the other hand, the chemical properties of the coconut shell<br/>particles were found to have less potential to absorb the moisture from surrounding due to<br/>its morphological aspects. Regarding the physical properties of the composite board, all<br/>design mixes passed the PNS. Design mix A had the lowest water absorption at 1.24%, and<br/>design mix F had the lowest thickness swelling with 0.27%. For the mechanical properties<br/>of the composite board, all boards passed the PNS. For the modulus of rupture, all eight<br/>design mixes can be classified as Type 100, while design mixes E, F, G and H containing<br/>15% coconut coir can be classified as Type 150, as well. Only design mix E and G can be<br/>classified as Type 200. Moreover, for the nail head pull through design mix G had the<br/>highest mean value of 414.62 kg. Analysis of all test results revealed that Design Mix G<br/>with 20 CSP: 15CF: 65VE is the optimum ratio. |
