Summary, etc. The study aims to research and produce a locally available fiberboard using the Dragon
Tail Plant (Tibatib) and epoxy resin as binder. Fiberboards were manufactured at the Forest
Product Research and Development Institute at the University of Los Baños. The
fiberboard produced is 75:25, 70:30, 65:35, 60:40, and 55:45 dragon tail plant and epoxy
resin mix designs with 0.8 g/cc density. To determine the physical properties of dragon tail
plant fiberboard all specimens were subjected to a series of tests, such as water absorption,
thickness swelling, and relative density tests. To determine the mechanical properties of
dragon tail plant fiberboard, all specimens were subjected to a series of tests, such as the
modulus of rupture, internal bond, and face screw holding test. All results were compared
b the Philippines National Standard (PNS ISO 16895:2017) and (PNS 230:1989)
specification for fiberboard. Dragon tail plant fibers are not like other fibers that are usually
used and knows; the fibers of this plant are not easily dried by the sun and should be used
with different instruments to dry them fully. The ratio of 65:35 dragon tail plant and epoxy
resin was this board’s maximum ratio. The board’s strength starts to decrease with the
60:40 ratio because of the moisture content of the fibers. The recommendation of this
research is to have more research to fully dry the fibers of the dragon tail plant using an
oven or other instrument, extract the fibers of the dragon tail plant using the same method
as sugarcane stems, cut the fibers into long pieces instead of 5 cm, and mix the binder very
well so that it will get its full strength. The summary of the evaluation on the acceptability
of the project study was “Very Acceptable.” This means that the properties and principles
of using the dragon tail plant an alternative material in producing fiberboard and epoxy
resin as a binder are effective.
Keyword: dragon tail plant, epoxy resin, fiberboard
