Summary, etc. Plastic straw creates a significant problem in the environment when not recycled, reused,
or disposed of properly. This is the central dilemma the humankind is facing right now.
Recycling of these plastic straws to make another product will lessen the adverse effects
on the environment and help to develop an alternative composite material. In this project
study, the particleboard was prepared using a plastic straw and polyester resin at a ratio of
50:50, 55:45, and 60:40, respectively. Physical and mechanical properties of the board
were investigated in this study. As shown on the tangible property test results, composites
of 60.00% plastic straws and 40.00% polyester resin have exhibited the highest
absorption of water and swelling of thickness. For mechanical property test results, all
mix designs have passed the face screw holding tests surpassing the 30.00 kg Philippine
National Standards, modulus of rupture of 80.00 kg per square centimetre and internal
bond test of 2.00 kg per cubic meter. Therefore, as stated in the results presented, the
particleboard in this study is acceptable as an alternative building material.
