Increase in need of housing unit in the Philippines meant increase in cement<br/>manufacture. As the population tremendously grow, the possibility that the source of<br/>cement may one day be depleted is at hand. Researchers now focus on finding ways to<br/>reduce manufacture of cement by producing sustainable construction materials utilizing<br/>alternatives for replacement of cement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the<br/>property characterization of cement bonded particle board (CPB) using scoria as partial<br/>replacement to cement. Laboratory size CPBs with dimensions of 1.25 x 30 x 30 cm were<br/>produced using cement: falcata particles ratio of 60/40 and scoria content as cement<br/>replacement of 0%SC, 5%SC, 10%SC, 15%SC, 20%SC, 25%SC, 30%SC and 35%SC.<br/>The falcata particles collected were hamermilled and soaked in water for 24 hours then<br/>air-dried in equilibrium moisture content. Cement and water were mixed with the<br/>particles until thoroughly coated with cement. The mixtures were mat formed, pressed<br/>and clamped for 24 hours. After the boards were cured and conditioned for 28 days, the<br/>boards were tested for their mechanical and physical properties and compared with<br/>control specimen (0%SC). The physical properties of boards gave remarkable result for<br/>all set with scoria replacements such that the least TS is at 0.15% while 12.33% in WA.<br/>For the mechanical properties, MOR of scoria replacements of 20%SC and 25%SC<br/>produced boards exceeding PNS/CTP 07 (1990) standard for non-structural 12 mm thick<br/>boards of 6.75 MPa. Also, the recorded maximum load resistance in NPT is at 121.55 kgf<br/>(1.19 kN) at 35%SC replacement. The results showed that the properties of the boards<br/>were influenced by the amount of scoria put in replacement to cement. Also 20%SC<br/>replacement produced good quality boards by satisfying the minimum requirements of<br/>PNS/CTP 07:1990 and exceeding performance requirements from commercial plants. |
