The Philippines, as a tropical country, experiences consistently high levels of UV<br/>exposure (index 7 year-round) and peak humidity levels of up to 81%. This study aims to identify<br/>the most effective surface coating for protecting wood against discoloration and strength<br/>degradation caused by prolonged UV and humidity exposure. These findings are intended to<br/>guide the restoration of the wood facade of the historic Meycauayan PNR Station in Bulacan,<br/>which is part of the ongoing North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) project by the Philippine<br/>National Railways (PNR) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Four<br/>coatings—Polyurethane, Acrylic Polymer Resin, Beeswax, and Varnish—were applied via<br/>single-pass brushing onto mahogany wood samples (100 x 200 x 10 mm). These samples<br/>underwent 60 days of natural weathering. Effects were assessed using CIE-Lab color analysis<br/>(ASTM D2244-16), UV penetration depth measurement, and nail-head pull-through strength tests<br/>(ASTM D1037-99). Testing and analysis were conducted in collaboration with DOST-FPRDI in<br/>Los Baños, Laguna. Results indicate that varnish provides the highest protection against<br/>discoloration, outperforming other coatings by 30.54%. Beeswax offers superior resistance to UV<br/>penetration, achieving 48% greater protection. Meanwhile, acrylic polymer resin exhibited the<br/>best performance in preserving wood strength, with an efficiency of 58.75%. A tally-scoring<br/>system was used to comprehensively evaluate the test parameters. Among the coatings, beeswax<br/>emerged as the overall best-performing option, achieving the highest aggregate score. |
