Plastic mulching is the process of installing plastic sheet atop the planting bed to suppress weeds and to preserve the moisture and the condition of the soil. It is one of the most effective technologies for optimum yield and quality enhancement of crops in agriculture industry. Mulching equipment usually are attachment for tractors which can be inconvenient to most of the Filipino farmers. This project presents the design and fabrication of a Multi-purpose Plastic Mulch Laying Machine that can perform bed forming, mulch laying, mulch tucking, and hole making simultaneously in one course. The research aims to improve the process of plastic mulching and reduce the time and energy consumption of the farmers. The machine operates at an average work rate of 26 ft/min and must be operated by two persons which maneuvers the trailer and activates the control. Especially designed hole maker can be equipped with punch head of various diameters depending on the crop requirement. Hole spacing can be adjusted to 1 ft. and 2 ft. which is suitable to most of the vegetable crops. With the improvement of the existing plastic mulch laying machines, the output of this study will be more capable; displaying reliability, efficiency, and productivity as used.-- Author's Abstract
