The study, “Valorization and Carbonization of Pili Nutshell into Shoe Insole Material”
investigates the use of carbonized Pili (Canarium Ovatum) nutshells as sustainable
alternative to traditional insole materials. Creating this innovation involves using
carbonized and refined pili nutshell, along with silicone sealant and polyvinyl acetate or
PVAc as binding agents, topped with a non-woven fabric support. The process includes
carbonization, pulverization, carbon activation, mixing, molding, forming, drying, and
finishing. The resulting product has impressive compression strength of >2000 N/pc,
remains flexible after 100 manual folds, and shows excellent resistance to abrasion of <4
N. With a moisture content of 22.32%, it confirms the insole's high performance. To further
justify the product’s quality, it is presented to fifty individuals and was evaluated by its
functionality, workability, comfortability, and aesthetics and received an overall mean of
4.41 making the resulting product’s performance very acceptable. The innovative product
contributes to waste management, minimized the environmental impact, and reduce
reliance on non-renewable resources in the footwear industry.
