Summary: Air pollution is a global problem that continuously worsens as time passes. Unfortunately, it contributes significantly to various respiratory diseases and deaths around the world. To address this, many studies have shown that air purifiers can effectively improve air quality conditions. However, there is still a lack of research on their cost- effectiveness and use of sustainable materials. Therefore, this project study aimed to design, develop, test, and evaluate an air purifying system using both conventional and solar energy sources and locally available organic filters such as coconut husks and carbonized rice hull. The prototype was tested in a controlled room with an initial air quality measurements of 4.36 parts-per-million (ppm) TVOC, 0.11ppm HCHO, and 29.1 PM10. After conducting series of tests, test results show that HCHO decreased from 0.11 to 0.09 ppm, and PM10 with a decrease from 29.1 micrograms per cubic meter (μ g/m3 ) to 22.1μ g/m3 . The results imply that the system is effective in reducing air contaminants. Moreover, thirty respondents, composed of industry experts and engineering students, evaluated the prototype and rated it as very acceptable (x̅=4.47), signifying that the system is functional, workable, durable, safe, aesthetic and economical. The primary beneficiaries of the project are the people working in an enclosed room with poor ventilation, and people with allergies, asthma and other respiratory diseases. The outcome of this project study aims to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 7, promoting good health and ensuring access to sustainable energy.
