The study, Development of a Conversion Kit from Shielded Metal Arc Welding to
Resistance Spot Welding, aims to provide a kit that allows the single purpose machine
(SMAW) to another purpose (Resistance Spot Welding). It will allow small fabrication
shops to tack thin sheets of metal without spatters at an affordable price. It has the
features of automated current cutter with the aid of a digital timer and easy to set up. It
also has good safety feature, as it is all made of good electricity insulators. The prototype
can spot two stacks of thin sheets of metal with the use of Shielded Metal Arc Welding
machine as the power supply to the conversion kit. The prototype was fabricated using
tools, equipment, and materials relevant to the structure of the said prototype. The test
results showed that the prototype are well functioning with a limit to a 0.5mm thickness
of thins sheets of metal such as stainless steel and galvanized iron. The said prototype
was evaluated by 20 evaluators composed of Bachelor of Industrial Technology
professors, welding-related professionals, and independent welders with at least 5 years
of experiences of welding using a prerecorded video of the prototype performing its function, and was rated with an overall mean of 4.776 with a descriptive rating of “Highly Acceptable.” This signifies that the conversion kit is useful to welding, automotive, and thin sheet metal fabrication shops.
