There is an urgent need to investigate ICT competency of teachers to know
if they have sufficient digital skills to use in teaching the 21st-century learners.
Teachers can create more interactive and dynamic lessons if they are sufficiently
competent in ICT. Thus, the study aims to describe Imus City public school
teachers' ICT skills and propose a capacity building plan to improve teachers'
proficiency in using digital tools in fulfilling classroom needs according to
intervening demographic variables. The study took into consideration 131
teachers from five public schools in Imus City who were chosen through cluster
sampling. Key demographics were gathered which were limited to age, academic
qualification, teaching career position and school assignment. ICT skills, also
called ICT competency in the study is limited to basic hardware operations,
personal ICT usage and use of ICT for teaching. A valid and reliable Likert-type
questionnaire was used with written permission from its original authors.
Descriptive and inferential statistics were used depending on normality of data.
Findings show that majority of teacher respondents from the City Schools Division
of Imus are aged 31-40 years old, baccalaureate graduates, Teacher 1 and are
mostly in Palico Elementary School. Their ICT competency is highest in use of
ICT for teaching, good level of competency, followed by basic hardware
operations, good level of competency and lowest for personal ICT usage,
moderate level of competency. There is only partial significant difference on Imus
City public school teachers’ level of proficiency in ICT Skills when grouped
according to demographic profile. Recommendations were given to provide more
training and monitoring among teachers whose ages are from 50 years old and
older.
