Transportation is an important aspect of life that affects many things, such as politics,
economic activities, production, consumption, and communications. Because of daily use,
accidents, road conditions, and rusting, vehicle maintenance and repairs have gained
prominence. In this study, we developed and assess an automotive hydraulic heater rim
aligner prototype to address operational challenges in servicing and repairing steel rim,
including the different approaches to repairing a 14-inch and a 15-inch steel rim. This
prototype is equipped with an electric hydraulic pump rated at 10,000 psi, which, in unison
with a 10-ton hydraulic cylinder, offers enough force to reshape or repair bent steel rims.
Though a significant investment, steel rims could be damaged, thus, preventing any
functionality and aesthetic properties of the car wheels. The hydraulic rim aligner machine
turns out to be among the best tools for speedy and efficient restoration of rims. The results
further showed a notable variation in the time taken to effect repairs onto the rims. The 14-
inch rims were repaired faster, while the 15-inch rims were repaired in slower than 14-inch
rim, depending on the severity of damage. The method adopted from the prototype is
expensive, yet it was completing repairs six times faster than its traditional counterparts.
Industry evaluators assessed the prototype on various aspects of performance, including
functionality, aesthetics, durability, workability, economy, and safety. The prototype was
rated "Very Good" on all counts, with mean values between 4.1 and 4.36, thus confirming
its reliability, user-friendliness, and high-quality design. Therefore, these results confirm
the prototype's potential for improving the efficient rim repair in automotive service
operations, especially when the turnaround time is critical.
