A fiber-based fire-retardant coating was developed using yellow bamboo (Bambusa
vulgaris) fiber, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and sodium silicate to enhance fire resistance in
plywood. Bamboo fibers were extracted, the treated with an alkali solution to remove lignin and
improve fiber quality before incorporation into the coating formulation. The coating underwent
physicochemical tests, including adhesion, chemical resistance, dry time, moisture content, and
total solids, as well as structural analysis using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR),
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Its fire-retardant performance was evaluated through the
Modified Vertical Flammability Test (MVFT) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Results
revealed effective fire resistance and material stability. The findings support the potential of
bamboo fibers in developing sustainable fire protection systems, particularly for applications in
vulnerable housing materials.
