Urbanization and increasingly busy lifestyles have led to a growing demand for automated plant
care systems. In response, this study introduces Budee, a Raspberry Pi-based smart companion
plant pot that integrates an array of sensors to monitor key environmental parameters such as soil
moisture, temperature, humidity, and light intensity. A dedicated firmware was developed to
interface with these sensors, allowing real-time data collection and cloud-based storage via
Firebase. An AI module using a reinforcement learning algorithm was implemented to analyze
the gathered data and intelligently control the water pump, optimizing plant care by adapting to
environmental changes.
To enhance user experience, Budee incorporates emotionally intelligent interactions through a
conversational AI chatbot and an LCD screen that displays visual cues of its mood. A mobile
application was also developed to offer a user-friendly interface for real-time monitoring, and
manual control of the water pump and lighting.
Based on the results, the sensor array was effective in collecting accurate environmental data, and
the AI module successfully adapted its decisions for plant care. The firmware and mobile
application functioned reliably, enabling smooth data flow and user interaction. Budee’s
emotionally responsive features contributed to a more personalized experience. A psychological
consultation evaluated Budee based on emotional responsiveness, social presence, user
attachment, and perceived support. The resulting average score of 3.5 out of 5 reflects Budee’s
effectiveness as a digital companion, while suggesting room for improvement in initiating
interactions. Overall, Budee demonstrates a successful integration of IoT, AI, and user-centered
design to reduce plant maintenance effort and enhance human-plant relationship
