Hair dyeing is a common practice with many consumers using chemical-
based dye that can cause damage to hair and scalp. The study aimed to develop
and evaluate the efficacy and safety of using garlic peel as a natural hair dye. This
study was conducted at the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila
during the Academic Year 2024-2025. Students under Home Economics
Department were chosen as the respondents through simple random sampling.
This design-based research is embedded with mixed-method research. Data
collection instruments included semi-structured interviews, observation and survey
questionnaires. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and thematic
analysis. In Phase 1: The analysis revealed that the lived experience of the
participants in using chemical-based dyes are full of harmful chemicals and may
cause damage to hair. In Phase 2: The mixture is composed of garlic peel and
olive oil, and it was processed through various method such as drying of the garlic
peel and cook it until it turns black. In Phase 3: The result of the gathered data in
the acceptance of garlic peel as sustainable hair dye, based on the mean of 4.09
and SD of 0.11 which is acceptable. In Phase 4: The process led to know on how
garlic peel can used as hair dye and solve the hair problem. The study concludes
that the developed sustainable natural hair dye is effective in dyeing hair, and it is
safe to use. Further research should be conducted to develop other formulations
of sustainable hair dye to create different colors of hair dye.
