The goal of this study was to understand the limitations of different teaching
approaches for meeting the needs of diverse learners when teaching them
fundamental coding concepts and their challenges. The study focused on CodeVerse,
an adaptive and interactive play-based platform for learning coding that improved
coding education with interactive exercises, timely feedback, and practical coding
challenges, which could display each skill of each learner.
The researchers utilized Design-Based Research (DBR) with the BSIE-ICT
students at TUP-M for the 2024-2025 academic year. Participants were evaluated on
their coding proficiency and interviewed about their learning experience. A cycle of
evaluation and improvement was completed to measure the platform's effectiveness
in improving engagement, problem-solving competency, and the adaptability of
knowledge and skills to any programming language.
While quantitative results noted a significant improvement in coding proficiency,
since over 85% of students obtained higher scores in the post-assessment, qualitative
results noted students acknowledged how CodeVerse enabled complex coding ideas
into simpler concepts while facilitating a dynamic and interactive learning environment.
Important forms of improvement were noted in features such as visuals, simulations,
and practical projects and activities, etc. Therefore, the researchers suggest further
implementation of CodeVerse beyond the study by different ICT programs to assist in
developing and enabling skill-based, learner-centered learning, while mitigating and
aligning to relevant skills in changes in ICT and related field standards.
