This research study aims to explore the Heirloom Rice Variety in the
Cordillera Administrative Region, preserving traditional rice farming, and raising
awareness of its cultural and nutritional value that would help educate the local
community and tourists. The Heirloom Rice Varieties that have been grown in the
terraces of Cordillera have been slowly being abandoned, due to various
constraints in the value chain, on the supply as well as the demand side.
Accumulating the data from surveys and interviews, the study shows that
the lack of awareness among the tourists and locals of Benguet, with farmers
continuing to migrate to more high-yielding varieties and vegetables and slow
pacing of production methods, as well as the lack of younger generation interested
and preferring to live on urbanized areas further affects the risk of extinction of
Heirloom Rice Varieties.
Facing these challenges, the researchers proposed a solution for
addressing the insufficient establishments that would promote Heirloom Rice
Varieties of Cordillera. The proposal considers the provision of a cultural and
research center solely for the preservation and promotion of Heirloom Rice
Varieties of Benguet Province.
