This study is focused on the fabrication and development of a Continuous-type Vertical Rice Dryer with a capacity of 200 kg which can be used by small to mid-scale farmers in lieu of the traditional rice sun drying. The Vertical Rice Dryer was made to assist farmers in maximizing their space in comparison to sun drying, as well as to accommodate the harvest of small scale farmers, which normally does not meet the minimum required tonnage of large scale rice grain dryers already in the market.
The operation begins by feeding the rice grains on the drying chamber, where the alternately positioned inlets and outlets apply the concept of cross flow heating. The heating assembly makes use of propane burners to heat the air supplied into the inlets.
The rice grain will then continue to move towards the vertical screw conveyor which will feed the grains again to the top. Every 30 minutes, the moisture level is checked and assessed. This model underwent series of test and modifications to ensure its performance. The continuous-type vertical rice dryer is a preliminary model for an alternative way of rice drying in the Philippines. The researchers still believe that this model is still in the process of improvement. Author's Abstract
