This dissertation explores the prospects and challenges of integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in higher education institutions in the Philippines, focusing on the perspectives of students and educators. Generative AI, represented by technologies such as ChatGPT, has emerged as a transformative force in education, offering unprecedented opportunities for personalized learning, enhanced engagement, and innovative teaching methodologies. However, this advent also introduces complexities, including ethical concerns, academic integrity issues, and the need for robust infrastructural support. Through a mixed-methods research design, this study addresses critical questions about the awareness, application, and implications of Generative AI tools within select Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the National Capital Region (NCR). The research findings reveal varying levels of awareness and usage among students and faculty, highlighting a significant potential for pedagogical innovation alongside notable challenges such as ensuring equitable access and addressing ethical considerations. The dissertation contributes to the discourse on integrating Generative AI in education by providing a nuanced understanding of its potential benefits and pitfalls. Recommendations for future research, policy formulation, and educational practice are presented, aiming to harness the positive aspects of Generative AI while mitigating its challenges. This study adds to the global conversation on academic technology and offers insights specific to the Philippine context, suggesting pathways for the responsible adoption of Generative AI in educational settings.
