Fabrics can be found in everyday apparels, bags, purses, and covers; it performs a significant role in the local economy as commercial products, gifts, and cultural objects. This study is focused in the development of an antibacterial bag fabric using bamboo yarns and infusion of a chemical with high antimicrobial properties. The product was made of 70% bamboo yarns, 30 % polyester and cotton threads, and copper oxide, where the bamboo yarns, cotton thread, and polyester thread were weaved into the weaving loom (habihan). After the fabric was made, it underwent the staining procedure in which the fabric was soaked for 5 hours in the mixture of 1:1 ratio of water and copper oxide in order for the fabric to absorb the chemical more effectively. Copper oxide has high antimicrobial properties. The fabric itself had no antibacterial impact on the microorganisms in the sample bacteria’s used, such as the Staphylococcus Aureus (S. Aureus) and Escherichia Coli (E. Coli). The fabric was dried and microbiologically tested, the test result implies that after staining, the fabric with copper oxide develops antimicrobial characteristics and had an 8mm to 9mm zone of inhibition into the test plate. The result shows that the bacterium becomes reactive into the sample fabric stained with copper oxide. Another test conducted is the tensile test, which determines the fabric's strength and weight capability. It undergoes a gravitational force, and determined that the fabric can withstand up to 105N per 102 /mm, or at least 10.7 kilos of force per 102
/mm. T=F/A is the formula used to calculate the 10.7 kilos of ultimate stress that the fabric can withstand until its collapsing point. Where T stands for Ultimate Tensile Stress, F represents for Force (105N), and A stands for Cross Sectional Area (102/mm). Using a Likert Scale, the product was presented to, and evaluated by 29 respondents, and got an overall mean score of 4.001 with the descriptive rating of “Very Acceptable”. These only shows that the formulated fabric can be used for bag material, wherein it can eliminate the transmission of bacteria. It can also make a significant contribution on the promotion of local weaving industry.
