Durian is a tropical fruit extensively farmed in Southeast Asia, recognized for its distinctive
flavor and scent. Durian peel is a readily available waste product, especially in Southeast
Asia. Particleboard has numerous benefits as a construction material, yet it also has
significant disadvantages. It is unsuitable for wet environments due to its susceptibility to
moisture absorption, which can lead to warping, mold growth, and lack of structural
strength. Therefore, the researcher has developed a durian particleboard that can utilize the
durian peel as an alternative raw material for particleboard to address both waste materials
concerns and construction materials. The researchers formulated five mix designs of
shredded durian peel (Puyat Variant) to isocyanate (P-MDI) resin, specifically 95:5, 93:7,
91:9, 89:11, and 87:13. The subsequent tests conducted include the density variation test
(DV), 24-hour thickness swelling test (24H TS), internal bond test (IB), and bending
strength test (MOR), in adherence to the PNS-ISO 16893:2017 standard in accordance with
P-GP REG and MR1 for Dry and Temperate Humid Conditions. The results indicate that
mix designs 1, 3, 4, and 5 of DV, mix designs 2 and 5 of 24-H TS, all mixtures of IB, and
mix design 3 of MOR met the PNS ISO standard, with values of -2.82%, 8.57%, 1.41 MPa,
and 10.86 MPa, respectively. The prototype was evaluated using an Evaluation Instrument
completed by 30 respondents, including professional engineers, architects, and
construction industry practitioners. The evaluation yielded an overall mean score of 4.04,
corresponding to a descriptive rating of "Very Acceptable."
