The demand for wood-based products is rapidly increasing due to the growing population
and businesses. This may cause rapid depletion of our forest resources. To meet the
increasing demand for wood, new alternatives for the said material must be found. One of
the main agricultural crops of the Philippines is sugarcane. Its byproduct, the sugarcane
bagasse, is the second largest agricultural waste in the country–which can be an
alternative material for wood. For this reason, the researchers have developed a
medium-density fiberboard using sugarcane bagasse. The sugarcane bagasse
medium-density fiberboard and Isocyanate as binder were produced using the following
mix ratios: Mix 1 (99:1), Mix 2 (97:3), Mix 3 (95:5), Mix 4 (93:7), and Mix 5 (91:9). The
produced fiberboard was subjected to a density variation test and a thickness swelling test
to determine its physical properties, while an internal bond test, modulus of rupture test,
and modulus of elasticity test were performed to determine its mechanical properties. The
testing procedures adhere to the PNS 16895:2017. Based on the test results, all mix ratios
successfully passed the Density Variation (DV). Mix 3, Mix 4, and Mix 5 demonstrated
strong internal bonding, passing the Internal Bond (IB) test and showcasing their
potential for durable applications. While the Thickness Swelling (TS) test and specific
mechanical requirements outlined in PNS ISO 16895:2017, these findings suggest that
sugarcane bagasse MDF holds potential for aesthetic applications, including wall panels
and partition walls, offering a sustainable and visually appealing alternative for interior
design.
