The Karagumoy, or “Pandanus Simplex” leaves are widely or generally used in making traditional handicrafts in Luisiana, Laguna. But the manual process of slitting and pressing the leaves is labor-intensive and time-consuming. This project is focused on designing and building a semi-automated machine that can slit and press the Karagumoy leaves in an efficient and mass production of strips for handicrafts. The machine includes adjustable blades for cutting the thorns and uniform sizes and speeds for blades to have sizes for each strip that can produce a pressing roller for accurate thickness of the strips; it includes ergonomic operation and safety features. Performance of this project can see the effectiveness and efficiency when it comes to slitting speed and thickness accuracy and ease of use compared to the traditional methods of the weavers. This project innovation is an alternative way for local weavers of Karagumoy handicrafts to increase the production, product quality, and potential income for the community.
