This study focused on the design and development of an Impulse Turgo Turbine Training Unit to provide the mechanical engineering students at the Technological University of the Philippines – Manila a practical experience in turbine and fluid mechanics. The primary objective of the study was to create a compact, educational tool (Dimensions: 1m × 0.75 m × 1.5 m) capable of generating a minimum of 20 watts of powers, including 20 turbine buckets and a blade runner diameter of 180 mm. The study underwent the conceptualization, fabrication, and the execution of five distinct experiments to assess efficiency, rotational speed, and the impact of varying flow rates and head on power output. Using a combination of theoretical analysis, experimental testing, and performance evaluation, the results confirmed the unit’s capability to conduct the five experiments surpassing the minimum power generation target under evaluated optimal conditions. Key components, including the turbine, water pump, and control panel, were successfully incorporated to meet educational objectives. Laboratory and user manuals were created to guide the instructors and students during the operation of the machine. The study concludes that the developed training unit provides a reliable, hands-on tool to bridge theoretical knowledge and practical application in hydropower technology, enhancing the student’s understanding of hydroelectric power concepts.
