This project entitled “Utilization of Waste Potato Starch For Water-Activated Gummed
Paper Tape” was developed to provide an alternative to plastic tapes. The packaging
industry is one of the industries considered to be a big consumer of plastics, particularly
plastic tapes, which plays a key role in sealing parcels, cardboard boxes, and cartons for
shipping. Due to high consumption, plastics have caused negative impacts on the
environment. With that being the reason, this project aims to lessen environmental
problems like climate change, pollution, etc., and provide paper tapes, a better alternative
to plastic tapes. Aside from being biodegradable, this tape is made from 100% organic
ingredients, making it an environmentally friendly paper tape. Functionality, workability,
durability, aesthetics, economy, safety, and marketability were all taken into consideration
while determining the acceptable performance of the manufactured water-activated
gummed paper tape. The mean ratings of the evaluation in the seven criteria are 4.87 for
functionality, 4.86 for appearance, 4.82 for workability, 4.84 for durability, 4.84 for
economy, 4.69 for safety, and 4.78 for saleability. As a result, the project gathered an
overall mean rating of 4.81 which is highly acceptable. The product earned the highest
rating for functionality and was proven to be convenient to use and purely organic
compared to plastic tapes in the market.
