"Filipinos are looking into clean and green technology as the only viable option for the country's transport industry because of the rising oil prices and worsening air pollution. E-jeepney was first introduced in the Philippines in 2007 by the non- governmental organization, Institute of Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), making us one of the pioneers in EV transportation in Asia with the aim of improving the environmental quality. However, EV adoption in Metro Manila is still on the initial stage. This study was conducted to determine the level of awareness on the sustainability and the acceptance on the adoption of EVs among the different stakeholders in Metro Manila. More specifically, this study explored the gaps, issues, and challenges relative to the sustainability of the e-vehicles.
A questionnaire-based survey was administered to 509 respondents from different groups where 288 of the respondents are commuters, 110 respondents are from the transportation sector, 67 respondents from LGUs, 44 participants from the government sector, and selected technical experts from each of the four local EV manufacturers. The results of the research were analyzed and interpreted using Kruskal-Wallis Test Statistics and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 2.3).
Findings revealed that stakeholders had expressed awareness on the sustainability and the acceptance on the adoption of EVs despite the issues and challenges identified by the respondents such as high minimum fare, lack of money to buy EV, lack of knowledge
in operating EV, lack of control policies and strategies, the lack of disposal program for e-vehicles that will reach their end-of-life, and the lack of policy on the control of the
operation of the old jeepneys/tricycles.
The major challenges in the adoption of the e-vehicles in Metro Manila as reported by the stakeholders are high minimum fare, lack of money to buy EV, lack of knowledge in operating EV, lack of control policies and strategies, the lack of disposal program for e-vehicles that will reach their end-of-life, and the lack of policy on the control of the operation of the old jeepneys/tricycles.
The study further concludes that the important factors to be considered for the long-term sustainability in the adoption of EVs are those which relate to partnership with government and financial institutions (financial sustainability), facility for the assembly of EVs locally (production sustainability), technical skills development and continuing skills enhancement (human resource sustainability), availability of spare parts and charging outlets locally (equipment sustainability), and CSR compliance, disposal facility, and safety work procedures (process sustainability).-Author's Abstract "
