This study sought to develop and evaluate LINGUA, a native android application,
which is a tool to enhance students’ knowledge and competence in the second language.
Three groups of respondents tested and evaluated the performance and
effectiveness of LINGUA in terms of its functionality, security, performance, pedagogical,
usability, support, communication and portability feature. The content of the application
itself was also evaluated in the study. Seventy-five respondents contributed to this study-
five IT experts, ten language teachers, and sixty students.
A pretest and posttest were administered to evaluate the effectiveness of LINGUA.
Also, a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale was administered to the respondents to
record their thoughts regarding the program. The study made use of descriptive statistics
to gather data on the effectiveness of the program. Independent sample t-test and paired
sample t-test were also used to determine the significant differences in the evaluation of
LINGUA for both experimental and controlled groups.
Results indicated that the features Usability (Mean=4.48; SD=.558), Pedagogical
(Mean=4.39; SD of .454), Performance (Mean=4.34; SD=.584), Functionality
(Mean=4.28; SD=.584) garnered the highest mean among the eight features indicated in
the study. On the other hand, Communication (Mean=3.99; SD=.647), Portability
(Mean=3.76; SD=.602), Security (Mean=3.74; SD=.678), and Support (Mean=3.22;
SD=.773) garnered the lowest mean.
Results of the independent sample t-test show that there was a high significance in
the scores of the controlled group (Mean=39.00; SD=3.35) and experimental group
(Mean=36.97; SD=1.99); (t=2.86, p=.006). According to the paired sample t-test, there was a very high significance between the pretest and posttest of experimental group (t=4.16,
p=0.001). On the other hand, results indicate that the controlled group’s pretest and posttest
was highly significant (t=3.49, p=0.002). As for the result of the questionnaire, it yielded
positive responses from the respondents
It can be concluded that the native android application LINGUA was helpful in the
enhancement of the language skills of the respondents. Also, the evaluation of the forty-
five respondents was advantageous in identifying the strengths and limitations of the program. Lastly, the developed mobile application was extremely beneficial in the
development of the macro skills and grammatical competence of the respondents.
