Boilers are vital for providing heat and hot water in the hotel industry. However, the
extraction fan component of the boiler system has a flaw that its fan motor runs
continuously, leading to overheating and frequent replacements. This issue affects the
maintenance team, causing them to inhale harmful gases produced by the overloaded
motor. To address this problem, a prototype was developed which includes a safety device
for the extraction fan controller, an electrical interlocking relay, an overload protection
relay, an emergency shutdown button, a selector switch with auto/off/manual modes, a
counter timer for monitoring motor usage, a carbon monoxide sensor with an alarm, an
LCD screen for monitoring, and a loud buzzer. The prototype has been tested and
automatically disengages the extraction fan when the water temperature exceeds the
allowed limit. Likewise, its overload relay was also tested and adjusted to prevent motor
overheating. The prototype received an excellent mean score of 4.74 from respondents
composed of Asst. Director of Engineering, Duty Engineer, Engineering Supervisor, and
Technicians on duty. These results indicate that the extraction fan motor now fulfills its
purpose and has the potential to prevent overheating.
