"The study was conducted to ascertain the transformational competencies and behavior skills of academic college leaders as the basis for a leadership enhancement program. A Delphi-type approach was used to gain insights into how academic college leaders perceived their role in a transformational way to the faculty subordinates. The expert panel consisted of academic college leaders (college deans and department chairmen) who were selected using criteria established by the researcher.
Results revealed that the domains of transformational competencies on idealized influence as perceived by the academic leaders were to foster a spirit of collaboration and cooperation and create a culture where everyone works to achieve a common goal as the essential role of academic college leaders. On inspirational motivation, a leader must create an inspiring work climate and encourage faculty members to pursue graduate courses, conduct and publish research and attend relevant trainings and seminars. A leader who values diversity and respect differences and can mediate colleagues' disagreements were the most essential for the domain on individual consideration. For behavioral skills, the academic leader must have visioning and anticipating skills, self-understanding, and empowering skills including value congruence.Significant differences were observed between transformational competencies in intellectual stimulation and individual consideration domains with the academic rank of the academic college leader. There were significant differences in the behavioral skills in anticipating skills with the attendance of the academic college leaders to seminars. After completing the successive rounds, the expert panel reached a consensus of 23 Transformational Competencies and 21 Behavioral Skills essential for academic college leaders.-Author's Abstract"
